Mapping African diasporic foodways to support climate literacy in Rio de Janeiro

This project aims to support youth in urban quilombos (home to descendants of Africans who escaped slavery) in Rio de Janeiro to map cultural foodways as a method of climate adaptation. The project will help urban quilombola youth bring together modern climate data science with their cultural foodways to work towards a more just and sustainable food system. Through community mapping convenings and workshops with Rio based organizations working at the intersections of agriculture, climate adaptation, and quilombola community development, the project will support quilombola youth in developing critical, community-driven climate and food literacies. The project will result in a series of immersive and interactive “storied seeds” maps that highlight stories connecting African Diasporic foodways and climate literacies. These maps will contribute to existing efforts in Rio to build both virtual and material spaces that foreground intergenerational learning, cultural preservation and development, ecological wellbeing, and creativity.
